Critical habitat purchased for conservation in Ecuador

September 9, 2025

The Tropical Andes hotspot is widely regarded as supporting higher levels of biodiversity than any other location on Earth.  It connects the montane habitats in the Andes with the lowland rainforests of the Amazon.

Global Wildlife Fund has supported our local partner in Ecuador – Jocotoco Foundation – with the acquisition of high conservation value land to expand its Tapichalaca Reserve, adjacent the Yacuri National Park.

Two parcels of land (80 hectares in total) have been purchased with support from Global Wildlife Fund.  The land, immediately adjacent Yacuri National Park, contains eastern montane forest with an exceptional diversity of plants and animals.  The acquisitions contain habitat for Mountain Tapir, Spectacled Bear, Jocotoco Antpitta, Black and Chestnut Eagle and Puma – even Jaguar have been recorded in the Tapichalaca reserve (one of the highest elevation records in Ecuador).
